Field notes from Jess ~
Rewilding in 2021 | Week 44 of 52
Following my rewinding instinct I flew to New Mexico this week to learn from Donny Dust ~ one of the most extraordinary humans I have ever met. He’s a modern day hunter-gatherer and practitioner of Ancestral skills and primitive living who has invested his time into being fully-self sufficient in any natural environment while thriving as a father, educator, writer, entrepreneur and soon co-starring with my good friend Ray Livingston in a new show produced by NBC, “Mud, Sweat and Beards”. His story is incredible and I would highly recommend reading his books, “Scavenger, A primal approach to lifestyle change” and “Earthromer”.
During this weekend’s Ancestral Skills Workshop, we crafted during the day and shared stories by campfire under the stars of this remote location where coyotes, mule deer, elk, wild turkey, mountain lions and even tarantula’s can be observed. (Check out the 🕷pic)
Here is a list of creations I’m flying home with today, thank you for this primal activation Donny:
🏹Water pitcher gourd
🏹Bowl and cup from a gourd painted with crushed ochre
🏹Handtools like blades and flake knives from flint knapping (lithic reduction)
🏹Soap stone carvings
🏹Cordage from hemp and natural jute
Topics we covered and experiences I had:
🏹Throwing an Atlatl, a meso-American weapon for hunting. Traditionally used for hunter/gather tribes. (Donny still uses this primitive weapon for hunting big game including wolf boar).
🏹Sinew processing
🏹Net making
🏹Knifeology
🏹Fire making using flint and steel
Hopefully @donnydust will join us in Washington State to bring one of his many courses from Paleo Tracks Survival School to the Wildkind community 🔥
Check out his TikTok and YouTube platform where he has inspired millions with his depth of knowledge and creativity. All things foraging, primitive skills, stone tools, wilderness survival and primal living.
You will see him as “Rio” in the upcoming movie, “The Big Bend” being featured tomorrow at the Austin Film Festival
